A Quick “L/D” Test of iReal 2E & SIMSCAN

The ability to obtain complete data is one of the key factors that defines a good 3D scanner. Whether a 3D scanner can acquire accurate data of a deep hole is crucial for engineering, manufacturing and many other industries. Therefore, we conducted a quick test between two of our popular 3D scanners, iReal 2E 3D color scanner and SIMSCAN 3D laser scanner from Scantech, to see how they perform.

To help better understand the deep hole scanning capability of the two 3D scanners, we came up with a notion called “L/D”, referring to the ratio of the hole diameter (D) to the hole depth (L). To begin with, we 3D printed three different types of prosthetic cavities using Raise 3D Pro2 Plus 3D. Now, let’s see how well iReal 2E and SIMSCAN respectively do.

Test Results of the “L/D”

As illustrated in the pictures above, the results of iReal 2E and SIMSCAN varied in three prosthetic cavities. iReal 2E has the L/D of roughly 1/1.2 and only No.1 caity can be captured completely while SIMSCAN can reach 1/2.1 and have a whole 3D scanning of these three sockets.

Conclusion

SIMSCAN from Scantech laser scanner has better ability of deep hole scanning, and the scan data will be completer and more accurate during capturing.

Notes: These test results are only applicable to the above objects for a better understanding of different 3D scanners. Additionally, the results are not rigorous as the opening and the hole are not regular.
